Type of Tea : Black Orthodox Loose Leaf Tea .

Origin : Nilgiri Hills, Tamil Nadu State, South India.

Altitude :  Grown at heights of between 1000 and 2500 metres above sea level.

Leaf Grade :  Super Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe 1

Brewing Guide : Use boiling water (100 degrees) , infuse for 3 to 5 minutes.

How to Serve : With Milk or with a Slice of Lemon. Can be used as a base for making Iced Tea.

Tasting Notes : Classic South Indian Floral character with a good fresh flavour, a good medium strong tea with a good aroma.

Colour in Cup :Coppery red.

The Nilgiri Hills History – Nilgiri Teas are one of India’s most famous teas with the first tea estates dating back to the 1830’s. The word Nilgiri is derived from Sanskrit meaning blue hill. The Teas are grown across an area of South India in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Nilgiri Teas are high grown in what is sometimes called the Blue Mountains. Named such because of the Kurinji Flower that blossoms once every seven to 12 years carpeting the hillsides of the Nilgiris with a vibrant blue colour. There are hundreds of tea estates producing over 130 million kilo’s per annum. Grown at altitudes varying between 1,000 metres and 2,500 metres. The famous Indian monsoon rains arrive in the district in mid summer, bringing floods and destruction but also life to the tea gardens. Traditionally a lot of ctc has been manufactured which is the small cut leaf grade (ctc. cut – tear – curl) used for tea bagging. With increasing demand for large leaf orthodox teas and organic teas we are seeing more of the higher grades of tea being processed. Some of the best teas are picked during the winter months and are referred to as “Frost Teas”.

Nilgiri Teas are bright with fragrant notes. The highest orthodox grades are known for having soft fruity notes and flowery aromas. Can be drunk with milk but black with a slice of lemon is very refreshing. Often used for blending with tea from other Indian districts
